God, man & sex Part1

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

THE name of Milton Himmelfarb would deserve immortality if only for his coinage of the famous aphorism that Jews earn like Episcopalians but vote like Puerto Ricans. A new anthology of his writings, Jews and Gentiles (Encounter, 273 pp., $25.95), edited by his sister, Gertrude Himmelfarb, offers a richer portrait of his truly ecumenical mind. Milton Himmelfarb saw Jews and Christians as allies in a struggle against the paganism that was becoming “the de facto established religion” of a putatively secular 20thcentury America.

Himmelfarb, who died last year, was an early advocate of the movement to stress common religious values in opposition to the entrenched and narrow-minded secularism of the times. The idea was controversial among Christians and Jews alike–less among those in each group who wanted to stress the differences between the two religions than among those who wanted to downplay the problems of secularism. “Chastising what is left of Christendom, some Christians now tend to be if not pro-neopagan then at least anti-anti-neopagan”; and as for Jews, they remain, on the whole, “conservatively attached to the old modernity of Spinoza.” For Himmelfarb, though, amicus Spinoza, sed magis amica veritas: He could not limit his understanding of the universe to the insights, however great, of that founder of Jewish philosophical modernity.

His is the voice of hard-won wisdom. “When my generation turned our backs on our parents’ concern with Jewish things, there was a joke we liked to tell about an apocryphal headline in a Yiddish newspaper: ‘Terrible Train Wreck; Jew Dies.’ That justified us to ourselves.” But Himmelfarb realized that it is only by remaining true to itself that Judaism can transcend the provincialism his generation feared; the chosenness of the Chosen People makes them ministers to the rest of humanity, and an undue exertion on their part toward conformity to the broader culture will end up harming Jews and Gentiles alike. The mission involved in the Jewish identity shines through the pages of this impressive book.

* The right-wing anti-sex polemic is a seriously tired genre. Its Reefer Madness tone tends to inspire doubt that its authors have any idea what they are talking about; it attracts critical mirth (e.g., “This essay must have been even better in the original Arabic!”); and, in the end, it does more harm than good to the cause of those of us who believe that today’s hypersexualization is a sign no longer of personal liberation but of America’s protracted cultural immaturity. All the more praise, then, to New York journalist Dawn Eden, who has produced a book called The Thrill of the Chaste: Finding Fulfillment While Keeping Your Clothes On (W, 224 pp., $13.99)–an intelligent, culturally aware, and (not least important) highly entertaining account of how one woman was able to break free of a culture of sexual objectification.
